Fibromyalgia and Lupus – How Can CBD Help You?

CBD can be a wonderful addition to your healthy routine to assist in the treatment of Fibromyalgia and Lupus. The brain is one of the key areas affected by fibromyalgia, with brain inflammation contributing to pain and brain fog. Recent research suggests that microglia in the brain and spinal cord play a role in fibromyalgia. When certain cells become activated, they can contribute to inflammation by amplifying pain signaling and transmission.

CB2 receptors within the body can modulate microglial cell function. One 2016 study in the Swiss journal “Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences” suggested that therapeutic strategies aimed at CB2 receptors could provide a promising treatment for inflammation. The therapeutic effects of CBD on inflammation have been documented in a range of studies, such as one published in 2015 in the journal “Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry.”

In addition, CBD offers neuroprotective properties and stimulate cell repair in the brain. This could improve brain function in fibromyalgia patients. CBD oil may also diminish anxiety and depressive behaviors by boosting anandamide signaling. In addition to helping to ease inflammation in the body, CBD oil may reduce neuropathic pain, which arises from damaged or malfunctioning nerves. Some fibromyalgia sufferers experience neuropathic pain as one of their symptoms.

Fibromyalgia sufferers also often experience difficulty with sleep. In a March 2019 study, published in “Epilepsy Research,” a single, large dose of CBD induced sleepiness among 30% of participants who suffered from treatment-resistant epilepsy. In another clinical trial with healthy volunteers, however, a single large dose of CBD did not create any change in sleep or wake cycles. CBD oil may help fibromyalgia sufferers with sleep, though further research is needed.

Chronic pain is also often accompanied by other conditions: anxiety or depression are present in almost 80% of the chronic pain population. The co-existence of pain and depression is particularly true for fibromyalgia patients. CBD can help alleviate anxiety in this population. In one 2017 human study, 300 milligrams of CBD taken orally caused a measurable drop in anxiety and cortisol levels.

There currently is no permanent cure for lupus, and the disease has multiple symptoms and a variety of comorbidities, making it hard to treat.

However, given the variety of CBD oil’s health benefits, there is massive potential in its use in both direct lupus symptom treatment, and as complementary medicine.

How should you dose CBD for Lupus?

Considering that most CBD products are not approved as medication, there is no defined dosage or even a recommended daily allowance table. According to research, the best dosing strategy includes the appliance of CBD dosage for inflammation.

CBD dosage for lupus entails introducing the substance in smaller doses, and then gradually increasing the dosage until the desired therapeutic effect is achieved.

The initial anti-inflammatory dose of CBD is 20 to 40 mg per day, which could be increased by 5 mg per week until the desired symptom relief is reached. CBD is sometimes used in doses of 200 mg per day for epilepsy symptoms. A safety study from 2011 claims that doses as high as 1,500 mg per day can be well tolerated in humans.

How much CBD oil to take for lupus?

As much as you need. So long as there are no conflicting drug interactions.

Limitations of CBD Treatment

The most frequent side effects of CBD include symptoms such as a dry mouth, drowsiness, lightheadedness, and drops in blood pressure. If any of these do occur, the dosage may need to be less or should be excluded from therapy.

CBD drug interactions happen in liver cells. Cannabidiol inhibits the expression of certain liver enzymes that are responsible for the metabolism of many foods and drugs. Most of the NSAIDs used for lupus and CBD oil should not be taken together!

The main problem with this therapy actually concerns drugs that are used to treat pain and inflammation, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, ketorolac, and ketoprofen. When taken together, CBD can elevate the blood levels in the body, inadvertently causing heart problems, stomach erosion, lung problems, and even cause bleeding.

CBD interacts with steroids, but not with prednisone.

Taken together, they can lead to liver damage, kidney damage, and immune suppression. On the other hand, there are no known reactions between commonly used, lighter steroid prednisone and CDB.

CBD oil and Plaquenil can be used together.

Both Plaquenil and CBD oil are known to lower blood pressure and cause a dry mouth. If the treatment is based upon the two, these symptoms need monitoring.

As lupus has many accompanying conditions, with their own set of drugs, possible interactions should always be considered.

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist prior to starting a CBD regimen to be certain your prescription medications will not negatively interact with your CBD oil.
